If you’ve ever hit rock bottom—or even just made a few decisions you're not proud of—you’ve probably heard it before: “You need to turn your life around.”
In recovery, that message can feel overwhelming—like you’re being asked to flip your entire life upside down. Changing habits is hard; changing your mindsets and routines takes time. So instead of demanding a 180° transformation, here's a simpler idea:
Change Doesn’t Start with Everything—It Starts with ONE Thing
Your current routine—whether productive or toxic—is built from repetition. Trying to reverse all of them at once is unrealistic and discouraging. That’s why I say:
Change ONE thing. Just one.
One Step Is More Than It Seems
I’ve guided people through all levels of hardship:
A student failing every subject
A friend drowning in addiction and legal issues
Asking for full lifestyle change doesn’t resonate. Instead, I’ll say:
“Raise one class from an F to a C.”
“Attend one AA meeting today.”
“Schedule one therapy session this week.”
“Try this local program just once.”
That one thing isn’t the solution—but it’s a beginning.
Momentum Grows from a Single Step
A single improved grade can rebuild confidence. One recovery meeting can reawaken discipline. It’s not about instant transformation—it’s about proving to yourself that positive choices matter. That belief builds hope. And hope keeps you going.
Local Activities to Keep Busy & Focused in Colorado Springs
Staying active and engaged in sober ways helps build new routines and reset your mind:
Explore Monument Valley Park, featuring trails, gardens, and peaceful spaces perfect for reflection and staying active (Monument Valley Park - Wikipedia).
Get outdoors in Palmer Park, Red Rock Canyon, or Austin Bluffs Open Space—great for hiking, mountain biking, or simply moving your body and getting fresh air (Parks in Colorado Springs - Wikipedia).
Outdoor Options in Woodland Park
Just a short drive from the city, Woodland Park offers stunning mountain scenery and meaningful ways to reconnect with nature:
Visit Pike National Forest for hiking, fishing, and peaceful solitude amid the trees (15 Can't-Miss Activities in Woodland Park - Travel Lens).
Check out the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center, a hands-on museum that’s fun, fascinating, and a great way to focus your mind in a healthy direction (Dinosaur Resource Center - Wikipedia).
Ready to Take One Step?
If you—or someone you care about—is striving to make a change, start simple. Try one of these:

Just begin.

Try One Thing Today

That one thing may feel small—but it’s bigger than staying stuck.
"One small action today can lead to a thousand better tomorrows."
You don’t need to turn your life around today. You just need to take one step.
